World Health Organization Regional office for Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO EMRO)
As a result of conflict, in 2017 alone, 68.5 million people were forced to leave their homes, including 25.4 million refugees.
Violence is a major source of disease and ill health. Absence of peace has devastating effects on human health, directly with injuries from fighting and indirectly by the breakdown of health services.
When conflict rages on, health care is increasingly under attack. In 2018, across the world, about 1,039 attacks injured or killed more than 635 healthcare workers, damaging about 360 health facilities.
The majority of such attacks occurred in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. The Region has the highest volume of conflict, refugees, and disruptions to the health systems in the world. Conflict became the new normal.
To support the launch of the initiative HoPE - Health as a bridge for Peace - we produced a promo video.
