UNICEF provides solar radios to vulnerable families

Meet Selina, a 16-year-old student and Bildad, a 12-year-old student, both from Kibera slums in Nairobi County, Kenya, who follow classes using a solar powered radio.

Since March 2020, all schools in Kenya have been closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. School closures have interrupted learning for millions of students across the country, who missed more than six months of formal education.

β€œThe solar radio has helped me a lot, explaining things with stories. That way I am able to paint a picture in my mind to help me follow in my literature studies,” Selina says. UNICEF Kenya is working closely with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to help students continue with their remote learning.

As part of the COVID-19 supported activities, UNICEF is distributing over 10,000 solar powered radios with light bulbs to vulnerable households across Kenya. This is reaching at least 40,000 children, to assist with remote and blended learning.

Trans.Lieu was engaged to produce this feature human-interest story of the ongoing COVID-19 response activities supported by UNICEF. Our crew interacted with Selina and other students to know and understand how they cope with this pandemic.
