UNICEF Somalia - Polio

Since November 2017, Somalia has been experiencing two outbreaks of circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (cVDPV). As a response, a series of polio campaigns are conducted, almost monthly, to raise the immunity of children under 5 years of age.

Analysis of the last two campaigns has revealed a decline in awareness levels, vaccine hesitancy especially among young caregivers, those returning from the diaspora, medical community and other ‘elite’ populations in predominantly urban cities. There is also emerging anti-vaccination sentiment fueled by the same among Somali populations in the US and the UK.

One way to reach these population groups is through social media. To help the Somalia Polio outbreak response programme, Trans.Lieu was tasked to produce an animation video (both in English and Somali) focusing on the key achievements so far and the challenges ahead.
